Conference Summary
Success!
NAMI Downtown Detroit had an extremely
successful Mental Health Month Conference in collaboration with
Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church on May 23, 2009.

The keynote
speaker, Dr. Gloria Pitts, D.O., a past president of the Black
Psychiatrists of America, Inc., provided a thought provoking
historical comparison of the treatment of mental illness to
that which is current. |

Ms. Neina
Abner, R.N. and NAMI family member, shared several strategies
for coping with hard decisions involving love ones. |

Dr. Nathan
Johnson, Senior Pastor of Tabernacle MBC, was dynamic in his
approach to the impact of mental illness on individuals,
families and communities and the need for compassionate
responses. |

Spirit of Detroit Award
NAMI Downtown Detroit was presented a
Spirit of Detroit Award by the City Council of Detroit,
“in recognition of exceptional achievement, outstanding leadership,
and dedication to improving the quality of life.“
